It’s not uncommon for customers to ask our service techs how to get better fuel economy. To help ease the strain on your wallet, Dave Arbogast Conversion Vans has put together 10 gas saving tips. Take a look at our list, and send us some of your ideas.
1. Don’t top off the gas tank and tighten the cap all the way.
Your tank needs both fuel and fumes, so don’t top the tank off all the way. So stop when the pump shuts off automatically. And remember to tighten the cap all the way.
2. Remove unnecessary items from your trunk.
Your van will use more gas when there is more weight on-board. So take out what you don’t need.
3. Go the speed limit and use the cruise control.
Speed limits are made for maximum safety and maintaining those speeds efficiently will give you better gas mileage. So travel the speed limit and use your cruise control when you can.
4. Drive conservatively and avoid hard stops.
Quick starts use a lot of gas. And try coasting a bit before stopping for a stop sign or a traffic light.
5. Avoid rooftop carriers.
Approximately one quarter of every gallon of gas used by your vehicle is needed to overcome wind resistance, so avoid carrying items on your roof. If necessary, use an aerodynamic carrier to help minimize drag.
6. Avoid idling and rush hour traffic.
Your engine can use up to a gallon of fuel per hour while idling. So, avoid rush hour traffic when possible.
7. Avoid accelerating up hills.
Build up speed before an incline, and maintain it on the way up. The less work your engine does, the better the gas mileage it will get. Also, coast while going down hill for additional gas mileage.
8. Use the A/C on the highway and open the windows at slower speeds.
While on the highway, having your windows down creates drag and reduces your fuel economy, so roll them up and use the A/C. And roll the windows down when you’re traveling through town.
9. Fill up your tank when it’s cool outside and before holidays.
Cooler temperatures, like in the mornings to in the evenings, will create less vapor and you will get more fuel in the tank than in the air. Also, fuel is expensive during the holidays. So fill up a few days before to save on the price-per-gallon at the pump.
10. Always use the correct grade fuel.
Use the grade of fuel that’s recommended by the manufacturer. In addition, TOP TIER detergent gasoline is even better for your vehicle. It is a class of gasoline with enhanced detergents, that exceed detergent requirements imposed by the EPA. It meets voluntary deposit control standards developed by four automotive companies, including General Motors. These detergents will help reduce engine buildup, maintain fuel economy, maintain power, and reduce emissions.
